The European Council Commitments, June 2009

It has now been confirmed by the EU that on voting yes for Lisbon:
Ireland, and all other Member States, will keep a Commissioner.
Ireland will remain in control of its own tax rates.
Irish neutrality will not be affected – no conscription, no defence alliances.
Ireland retains control of sensitive ethical issues such as abortion.
Workers’ rights and public services are valued and protected in Ireland and across the EU.
These commitments are compatible with the Treaty of Lisbon and take effect when the Treaty enters into force. The commitments will guide the interpretation of the sections of the Treaty of Lisbon related to taxation, the right to life, education, and security and defense policy.
These commitments will be established as a protocol, on the date of the next accession Treaty. Protocols form an integral part of a treaty. They are used to clarify the practical impact of a treaty in specified areas.
